Information Technology Strategic Plan
Vision and Guiding Principles
for The Ohio State University
Proposed Vision Statement
June 2003
The Ohio State University will be recognized among its
benchmark universities as a premier provider of technology infrastructure,
services and support used to facilitate the "advancement and
the well-being of the people of Ohio and the global community through
the creation and dissemination of knowledge."
The Ohio State University will also be known for
its "innovative use of technology" for teaching, learning,
research, service and organizational effectiveness, as envisioned by the
Ohio State University Academic Plan.
PlanIT Guiding Principles
1. Engaged Leadership
Develop and implement an Information Technology governance model to provide
a clear framework for ongoing dialogue, collaboration and agile and coordinated
decision-making within The Ohio State University colleges and business units to
take advantage of current and future opportunities.
This will be accomplished by:
- Providing the necessary framework and direction to
position Ohio State as a leader in the innovative use of technology
for teaching, learning, research and organizational effectiveness.
- Articulating objectives and priorities that promote
rewards and accountability for using technology.
- Encouraging exemplary practices that can be replicated
and deployed fairly through policies, standards, guidelines and plans.
- Cultivating innovative and sustainable funding strategies
while continually assessing the appropriate blend of central and distributed
technology support and services.
- Providing responsible stewardship of fiscal and other
resources.
2. Enabling Infrastructure
Build and deploy an universitywide IT infrastructure
of people, processes, policies and technologies, which is accessible,
dependable, secure, flexible and scaleable to meet the teaching, learning,
research, and organizational needs of The Ohio State University.
This will be accomplished by:
- Integrating information technologies into business
operations, security, data and knowledge management and distributed
learning.
- Fostering economies of scope and scale while rewarding
and advancing what is distinctive and aligned with Ohio State's Academic
Plan.
- Designing systems that are built to anticipate and
facilitate change.
- Assuring that Ohio State information technology professionals
have the competencies that they need to grow personally and professionally
in order to contribute to Ohio State's technology environment.
- Exploring and assessing new and emerging technologies.
3. Seamless and Secure Access
Adapt the information technology infrastructure to provide
the university community with secure, simple, personalized, timely access
to information, services and support anytime, anywhere.
This will be accomplished by:
- Adapting the universitywide infrastructure to provide
seamless access to local and global services, support and resources
that is secure, trusted, responsive, ubiquitous, inclusive and adaptive.
- Securing The Ohio State University's intellectual
assets and rights.
- Protecting the privacy of university constituents.
- Being available to users anytime, anywhere.
4. Empowered University Community
Create a university community environment both traditional
and virtual that will allow all to benefit from and contribute the continuing
evolution of teaching, learning, research, and organizational effectiveness
at The Ohio State University.
This will be accomplished by:
- Providing users with the training, support, tools
and information needed to foster innovative and effective uses of technology.
- Preparing future generations with the skills and
literacy needed to be successful.
- Expanding self-service and support offerings to students,
faculty, staff and administration.
- Providing awareness and access to information and
services.
5. Collaborative Environment
Build an enterprise infrastructure that is user-centric
and cooperative featuring open and informative learning and working communities,
shared knowledge and information, coordinated communication and decision-making
channels, and interoperable and consultative processes.
This will be accomplished by:
- Understanding the complexity and responding to the
Ohio State's distributed information technology environment.
- Focusing on Ohio State's fundamental mission while
working within limited and disparate resources.
- Providing and maintaining communication channels
and ample opportunities for communitywide discussion, debate and advisement.
- Developing broadly based partnerships throughout the
university community and beyond.
- Strongly supporting the interdisciplinary efforts
of the university community.
