Question 4: The academic plan calls for "providing improved state-of-the-art Information Technology capabilities to improve the quality of academic advising and other student support services." What specific suggestions do you have for improving these areas with the use of technology? What do your peers share with you about other academic institutions?
  • better advisors that have more time to spend with students
  • degree report, online scheduling - but not enough details - tie bulletin and master schedule - better search engine for the class schedules - centralize class information between registrar and departments
  • electronically schedule appointments with advisor
  • not all students are the same in the way they get information - don't loose sight of the personal touch
  • sign up with a counselor online
  • is technology driving us or are our needs driving us? Are we just doing things because we can?
  • student information system
  • implement earlier recommendations on how to improve academic advising
  • retention TRAX software
  • conduct ongoing assessments of student performance - attendance, how they are doing throughout the quarter - develop a system that makes it easier for faculty to report on how students are performing
  • develop an "Ask the Expert" system to holistically look at a student's issues or concerns and offer the best advise for the student
  • include targeted/ strategic information to students instead of overwhelming them with too much information (Have you thought about...)
  • portals for students to check their homework - self help to manage services
  • technology skills should be a component of tenure decisions - training would have to be available
  • need a single point of collecting data - get rid of shadow systems
  • technology fully integrated into the classroom
  • wireless technology to distribute information
