Subject: OSU PlanIT - Information Technology Strategic Plan

The Office of the Chief Information Officer is proactively seeking to better understand and prioritize its customers' IT needs and therefore is seeking to develop a project based "roadmap" to guide the institution towards achieving its technology vision. This ambitious 25-week undertaking will culminate in a written technology plan to be completed by the end of July. This memo expands on the project description and includes a list of the Team PlanIT Project members.

The project's primary goal is to create a unified vision for information technology at OSU and develop strategic initiatives that will help achieve the vision of the university's Academic Plan. Ultimately, this will translate into better information technology service and support for students, faculty, administrators and staff across the institution. A team of experienced OSU staff will be leading this effort to develop “doable” strategic initiatives that implement the information technology (IT) plan. The plan will include guidelines for the continuing investment in and implementation of IT at OSU. The Office the Chief Information Officer will provide executive sponsorship and oversight during the project.

The key objectives of this project are:

  1. Review the strengths and weaknesses of OSU’s current academic and administrative computing environment
  2. Explore additional opportunities to enhance today’s academic and administrative computing environment
  3. Understand OSU’s future IT requirements from student, faculty, staff and administrative perspectives
  4. Create a university-wide vision that sets the direction for IT at OSU
  5. Develop major goals that support the vision
  6. Identify current gaps in IT capabilities that are preventing OSU from achieving those goals
  7. Identify initiatives that will close the gaps, and build a strategy to successfully implement these initiatives over the next three to five years

A Core Project Team has been assembled to gather input from you, as well other university constituencies, through interviews, surveys and focus groups. Your input is essential to the success of this vital project. We invite you to direct inquiries, suggestions and comments to individual team members or to Ilee Rhimes, Chief Information Officer.
