Computing Software

Where can I get Internet software?

Depending on your computer, you most likely already have software for Internet access that came with it. Plug-ins and helper applications are available from various Internet sites. Check the OIT software link at osusls.osu.edu for additional software.

Does Ohio State offer discounts on software?

Yes. OIT offers a variety of public domain, bulk purchase, and site-licensed software at reduced cost or no charge at oit.osu.edu/site_license. Specific titles of discounted Microsoft software available to students are described at it.osu.edu/personal_use.

Does Ohio State provide antivirus software?

Yes. You can get it from the software download site at osusls.osu.edu. Most importantly, to protect yourself and campus colleagues, you should install antivirus software before you get to campus or as soon as you arrive.

What operating systems does the university support?

Ohio State currently supports Windows XP and Vista or later releases and Macintosh OS X and later releases. Get details at 8help.osu.edu/918.html.

Can I use unsupported software products?

You can use almost any software that you want on campus as long as it doesnÕt violate any policies or laws, or present security risks. For example, if you prefer WordPerfect to Microsoft Word, you are genereally free to use it. Be aware, however, that using unsupported products will make it harder to find help if you need it and your college, department, or major program may have specific requirements. The Student Computer Centers on campus have restrictions on the software that may be run on their computers. In these environments, you will need to use the supported applications.

Why should I purchase my own copies of any software, rather than software I get from friends or family?

The simple answer is that using copies of software that you obtained from friends or family may be illegal. Violation of the university policy on the use of copyrighted software can result in severe sanctions. Having your own legal copy of software makes life easier. You can contact product support if necessary and obtain updates or fixes without fear of being caught with illegal software. OITÕs policy is to assist users only with software that they have legitimately licensed. For more information on the universityÕs responsible use policy, visit cio.osu.edu/policies/use_policy.html.
