Safe Computing and Protecting Your Privacy

How can I practice safe computing?

Ohio StateÕs Safe Computing site at safecomputing.osu.edu answers many security questions and provides tips for keeping your computing safe and private.

Does Ohio State offer Anti-Spam Filtering?

Spam filtering is an important first-line of defense against computing intrusions, and Ohio State offers an anti-spam service to reduce commercial junk e-mail for central system accounts. The filtering technology scans all e-mail messages addressed to Ò@osu.eduÓ and blocks unwanted mail before it reaches the central e-mail server. You can also set your own filtering preferences for spam that gets past the initial screening. Access the OSU spam filtering service at antispam.osu.edu and find out how to customize your account at 8help.osu.edu/2746.html.

Is my student information kept private?

Yes. Access to information about individual students and student records, including the annual Student Directory, is governed by the privacy and access provisions of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). The University Registrar is responsible for university FERPA policies. To get details on FERPA and learn more about what Ohio State is doing to protect the personal data of students, as well as faculty and staff, go to cio.osu.edu/buckeyesecure.

Does Ohio State have a policy on file sharing and computer use?

Yes. The universityÕs Òresponsible useÓ policy covers illegal movie and music sharing, copyrighted software, and the appropriate use of computers and other technology. Violations can result in severe sanctions. For the universityÕs responsible use policy, visit cio.osu.edu/policies/use_policy.html. For a quick overview of copyright and other legal issues, visit safecomputing.osu.edu/copyright.html.

Do I need insurance for my computer?

Insurance is a good idea. Ohio State does not provide insurance for student belongings that are stolen or damaged. Check with your parents to see if they have a policy that covers student property in residence halls or that may be added at an additional premium.
