Computing Hardware

Are there computers available for public use?

OIT operates many Student Computer Centers on the Columbus campus that you can use at no charge. All are fully equipped and feature Windows and/or Macintosh computers. The hours of operation, locations, hardware and software, can be found at scc.osu.edu. The new Sullivant Learning Commons offers technology and library resources. Get details at library.osu.edu/sites/sullivant/learning_commons.php.

Do I really need to have my own computer?

The short answer is no. Owning a computer is not a requirement at Ohio State, except in certain major programs including Design and the Executive MBA program, because you can use the computers in the Student Computer Centers. However, owning a computer can be useful because your academic work will require a computer at some point. Additionally, if you live in a residence hall, you can use ResNet, the universityÕs high-speed Internet service for residence halls. Get details at resnet.osu.edu.

What do I need to look for in a new computer?

Choose the type of computer with which you are most comfortable, unless your college, department, or major program has made a specific recommendation. Start with a fairly complete list of what you want to do with it and make sure it has adequate features and capabilities to serve you for a reasonable period of time. Visit 8help.osu.edu/918.html for suggested minimum requirements.

Should I get a Macintosh or a Windows PC?

The university offers technical support for both types, so this question comes down to your personal preference or your college, department, or major program requirements. If no specific recommendation is made, choose the one with which you are comfortable.

Should I get a laptop or a desktop computer?

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The university supports both, so choose the one that suits your needs if your college, department, or major program has not made a specific recommendation.

The biggest advantage to a laptop is its portability, especially with wireless Internet service. The performance gap has narrowed, but the best desktops are still faster and more powerful than the best laptops. Desktops also tend to be slightly less expensive than similarly featured laptops, are sturdier, and are more easily and inexpensively upgraded, giving them a longer expected lifespan.

Another issue is security. Laptop portability makes them an inviting target for theft. Consider purchasing security equipment in addition to any computer you buy, and be particularly watchful if you bring a laptop to the university.

Should I buy a computer before I come to campus or after?

If you buy a computer before you come to Ohio State, youÕll have more time to learn about and practice using your system. However, by waiting until you arrive, youÕll have the opportunity to become more familiar with campus facilities, get recommendations from your college, department, or major program and see how other students use their computers. Also note that some vendors offer back-to-school specials in August and September. Contact 8help@osu.edu for assistance or advice.

Does Ohio State offer discounts on computers?

Ohio State does not sell computer equipment, but the university does maintain discount agreements with vendors. Information is available at 8help.osu.edu/1493.html. Also look for educational discounts from major computer web sites under their ÒeducationÓ section.

Do I need my own printer?

No. You can print on university laser printers in many Student Computer Centers. A print quota per quarter allows you limited free black and white printing. You can purchase additional printing using your BuckID card and purchase color printing at the two UniPrint sites on the Columbus campus. If you want the convenience of having your own printer, you can purchase one relatively inexpensively, but carefully consider the ongoing cost of supplies such as paper, ink, and toner as well. For more details on printing costs, see uniprint.osu.edu.
