eLearning

Enhance learning experiences Ð in the classroom and online Ð with innovative technology resources provided by Technology Enhanced Learning and Research (TELR). The TELR team includes eLearning consultants, multimedia experts, visual and information designers, application developers, and researchers. TELR initiatives and services include faculty support, professional development for faculty and staff, and research and development of eLearning strategies. The TELR team teaches the basics of Carmen, Ohio StateÕs learning management system, and advises on enhancing courses with online discussions, quizzes, assignments, and multimedia content. TELR also supports eLearning innovation through internal expertise and funding incentives and by partnering with individual faculty and units on external grant opportunities.

For more information about TELR and its services, visit telr.osu.edu, send e-mail to telr@osu.edu or call 688-5875.

Carmen Learning Management System

Carmen, Ohio StateÕs learning management system, is used by instructors, staff, and TAs to create and share materials. Carmen automatically creates a blank course shell, complete with a class roster and a set of course tools, for every course in the RegistrarÕs Master Schedule. Instructors can e-mail students, create and manage groups, engage students in discussions and online chats, administer quizzes and surveys, track student progress, and submit final grades to the Registrar. Students can access course content, check their grades, view alerts for class activities, submit assignments electronically, and communicate with each other. Carmen space is also available for other university purposes upon request.

To access your Carmen courses, go to carmen.osu.edu and log in with your OSU Internet username and password. From carmen.osu.edu, follow the link for instructors to learn more about Carmen, take a self-guided tour of CarmenÕs tools and features, or sign up for Carmen workshops.

Distance Learning

Several classes and degree programs at Ohio State are taught predominantly online Ð often with students and/or the professor participating at a distance. The TELR team is available for initial consultations and can provide information about building a business case for investing in online learning. Distance learning and hybrid course resources are available at telr.osu.edu/resources.

The Digital Union

The Ohio State UniversityÕs Digital Union is the place where faculty, students, and staff explore emerging technologies. Members of the university community can consult with expert staff and use production facilities and training resources to complete multimedia projects, learn about emerging technologies, see them in action, and take part in strategic conversations about digital scholarship and eLearning. The Digital Union, 370 Science and Engineering Library, is open M-R, 9 am to 10 pm; F, 9 am to 6 pm; SU, 1 to 6 pm during autumn, winter, and spring quarters. For details, go to digitalunion.osu.edu, send e-mail to digitalunion@osu.edu, or call 292-2793.

College of the Arts & Sciences

R2 is an innovative, interdisciplinary summer program that facilitates faculty and undergraduate teamwork on a research project Ñ the deliverable being a publicly accessible, media-rich, digital portfolio chronicling the research effort. To view projects and get information on how to apply, go to digitalunion.osu.edu/r2.

Technology Education And Multimedia Skills (TEAMS) Program

The TEAMS program starts with technology skills-building classes for students who are working either with faculty on research or class work, or with staff in academic offices. In addition to providing hands-on training in the Digital Union, these classes expose students to concepts such as intellectual property, universal design and accessibility, and eLearning pedagogy. Faculty or staff may propose class or research TEAMS participation. For more information, visit digitalunion.osu.edu/teams.
