by Sally Hritz Technology Enhanced Learning and Research (TELR) is pleased to host a special presentation on the topic of building online learning environments that features guest speaker Nigel Paine, head of people development for the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). “Moving from Content Delivery to Knowledge Management: Building an Online Learning Environment that Works” is the title of the presentation. The event takes place on campus on Monday, August 11 at 10 a.m. in 302 Pfahl Hall. In this session, Prof. Paine describes the BBC’s journey to move a massive training and development infrastructure online while retaining knowledge management and intranet coherence. The BBC maintains a long tradition of training and development for TV and radio broadcasters, journalists and technologists that it continues to evolve by adding alternative learning strategies. With more than 27,000 full time staff, the BBC is the largest broadcast training provider in the world. It also delivers external training to the UK’s large media organizations and to 17 countries around the world. Prof. Paine’s talk will show the impact of broadcasting innovation and new media (Web) on the BBC’s training and development function. He will show “how the fragmented online course development and face to face programmes have been pulled into a coherent single environment by exploiting the BBC’s intranet: Gateway,” and “…demonstrate how we are trying to build a culture of knowledge sharing where every member of staff sees him or herself as a teacher, learner and source of business knowledge.” In addition to leading the BBC’s People Development operation, Paine is a specialist in online learning and using technology for work and life. He is also a visiting professor at Napier University in Edinburgh specializing in new learning technologies, and a fellow of both the Royal Society of Arts and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development. The BBC is world renowned and among the largest broadcasters, reaching millions of people each day through its 30 TV channels (including BBC America with 20 million subscribers), 54 radio stations, 43 radio language world services, 48 magazines, and a massive Web site. In addition, the BBC has pioneered interactive television and convergent media (interactive television, radio and the Web). There is no charge to attend Prof. Paine’s presentation, but reservations are required. Please refer to TELR News and Events for additional information. |
