New Grant for Satellite Internet Technology

by Emmett Crawley

The Office of the CIO, in partnership with OARnet and ITEC-Ohio, has received a $65,000 grant from the American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC) to support the design and construction of a trailer-mounted Tachyon satellite dish to transport advanced satellite Internet technology. The project’s focus on delivering advanced networking applications to geographically remote locations and sites lacking terrestrial connectivity supports OSU’s mission to developing new partnerships through technology to meet the educational needs of distance learners throughout the state.

Specifically, researchers in this collaborative effort intend to design the Internet2 access system to be capable of being easily set up and operated by one person at any location. It will be a prototype, used as a laboratory to study alternative designs, components, operational characteristics, and operator requirements. The dish system will be constructed by June and will be demonstrated at conferences and other events. Watch for more information about this project in campus media.
