2007 Achievements

Learning Environments Initiative
Part 1  Develop and implement new learning-driven design and maintenance guidelines for university pool and departmental classrooms.
Part 2  Increase the universityÕs technology-enabled classroom inventory by seven rooms per year over the next five years to increase support for modern technology enhanced learning.

Since 2004

Developed a comprehensive Funding Gap Analysis model for technology in the Classroom Pool; increased the number of technology classrooms from 85 to 201; installed wireless network infrastructure in the Classroom Pool and primary student gathering areas; replaced 42 aging classroom projectors; set up remote monitoring of 191 classroom AV systems; constantly evolved the system design for technology and teaching methodology changes, incorporating videoconferencing/distance learning capabilities; added an evening Classroom Helpline position; established the Sullivant Learning Commons; transferred scheduling of the Student Computer Centers for classroom use to the Scheduling Office; and updated the process for maintaining labs, classrooms, and library machines to reduce support calls and improve performance.

Since 2007

  • Upgraded 19 classrooms and auditoriums ranging from 16 to 220 student seats and totaling 985 seats. Improvements varied by room and included new technology installations with video, audio, and classroom control facilities; new paint, ceilings, and furnishings; improved lighting, screens, and chalkboards; and asbestos abatement.

  • Supported technology installations in 23 classrooms and a collaborative teaching space, totaling 538 student seats; the universityÕs central pool technology classroom inventory stands at 201 at the end of 2007.

  • Realigned Student Computing Center facilities and hours: opened a new center in the renovated Jennings Hall; reopened the computer center in the Central Classroom building following building renovations; closed the center in Brown Hall, which is scheduled for demolition, providing an overall net gain of 30 student seats. Shifted 24/7 hours of operation from the Student Computer Center in Baker Systems to the computer center in Science and Engineering Library, which is open around the clock and provides late-night, ID card-controlled access as well as a security guard.

  • Began remodeling in the Science and Engineering Library to create a second University Libraries/OIT-sponsored Learning Commons.

  • Completed Phase II of the Sullivant Learning Commons and opened a multimedia space with 12 Macintosh computers, a large format color plotter, and additional A/V capabilities.

  • Set up student computing facilities in the Study Place at High (SPAH) in the former LongÕs Bookstore to provide student drop-in, study, and work space during the Thompson Library renovation.
