2007 Achievements

Knowledge Bank Initiative
Develop and implement the Ohio State University Knowledge Bank. Establish standards for accessibility, transmission and delivery of digital assets such as large data sets including images with other faculty, students and funding agencies.

Since 2004

Redirected internal Library and CIO staff and hardware resources for the Knowledge Bank pilot; received $400,000 in funding for the Knowledge Bank initiative; implemented D-Space to manage digital content and increase storage; participated in the MIT Mellon grant for D-Space Federation; made over 250 presentations to encourage stewardship of digital assets; established more than 50 Knowledge Bank communities; archived 27,000 records; dedicated three library personnel to help implement metadata profiles; participated on the OhioLINK steering committee for a statewide digital repository; hired an electronic records manager/archivist to fill a new joint CIO/Libraries position; began testing D-Pubs, an open source platform to manage the creation and distribution of electronic journals; developed and began the beta test of OSU:pro; established a Rights Management Center to assist with copyright and intellectual property issues.

Since 2007

  • In response to the rapid growth of the Knowledge Bank as the second largest D-Space repository in the United States, and seventh in the world, hired additional personnel: a metadata librarian to work with communities to ensure efficient, effective discovery and a programmer to contribute code to D-Space and develop D-Pubs; established an input and quality control position to develop and maintain consistent standards.

  • Completed a gap analysis to determine requirements for achieving status as a "trustworthy repository."

  • Upgraded the D-Space platform to enhance functionality.

  • Issued the first electronic journal, the Disabilities Studies Quarterly, on the D-Pubs platform and completed testing new modules of D-Pubs for future enhancements.

  • Developed ways to repurpose data for multiple uses.

  • Promoted the Knowledge Bank with presentations on campus and throughout the community, including a video presentation.

  • Joined the OhioLINK Steering Committee to implement a statewide repository, the Digital Resources Commons.

  • Continued development of OSU:pro, Ohio StateÕs online database of the expertise of members of the university community, by extending funding and establishing new requirements for citation data across disciplines.
